OUGD504: Website Task

by Roxxie Blackham on Wednesday 16 October 2013

Look on websites and write down the 1st words that come into your head, then try to identify whether that was intended by the designer by answering the following 2 questions:

  1. What is the purpose of the website?
  2. Who is the target audience?
  3. What do the target audience need from the website?
APPLE:
slick, expensive, bright, clean, fluorescent

1. The purpose of the website is to sell Apple's products by informing you why their products are better than the rest, as well as persuading you with clean and concise images.
2. Middle class males and females, between the ages of 18 and 40.
3. They need to understand the brand of Apple and what they're about. They also need clear, concise and modernist navigation and layout which reflects the design aesthetics of Apple and their products.

LEEDS COLLEGE OF ART:
boring, thin, busy but structured, colourful

1. The purpose of the website is to promote the college and what they're about to internet browsers and potential university students / employees.
2. Students between the age of 18 and 25. Can appeal to the older generation of students, but mainly aimed at the younger audiences who are carrying straight on from A levels with their studies.
3. The target audience need to be able to navigate around the website with ease, whilst looking for relevant information about courses that they could potentially be studying. The audience will also be looking for quality in the university.

BBC:
white, blocks, information, busy, weather, current news

1. The purpose of this website is to inform the general public about the ongoing current news around the world, as well as the weather. The BBC website can also be used to watch TV, radio and iPlayer on - so is interactive.
2. The target audience for BBC news would be mature adults interested in current news affairs. The layout of the website could encourage younger adults, say 25 to 40, to look at it more than the elder generation who aren't as interested in looking for news on the internet.
3. The target audience need a clear and concise website, that is constantly up to date with current news affairs. The website needs to be easy to navigate, read and follow with exciting and broad particles of information spread across the site.

MY OWN BIKE
trendy, shiny, clean, German, minimalist

1. The purpose of this website, I'm guessing, is to sell bicycles to bike enthusiasts. I can't really tell, as it's all in German!
2. The target audience would be German bike enthusiasts - younger ages, around 20-30, due to the minimal yet illustrative feel to the logo. The sleek feel to the website also suggest mature and successful bike enthusiasts.
3. The target audience will need a website that is easy to follow, showing them exactly what the bicycles are like and how they differ from any other bicycle company.

SLAVERY FOOTPRINT
colourful, confusing, what?

1. I'm not entirely sure what the purpose for this website is. From the title, I'm guessing it is to inform and educate the reader about slavery.
2. The target audience would be younger people, due to the playful and childish colours that have been used. Possibly 15-25 year olds?
3. The target audience need to understand what the website is about and how to navigate around it. It's a really confusing website to get around, so it definitely needs reworking so that the reader understands where to click and where to read.

LINGS CARS:
eww, awful, cheap, why the chicken?, teletext, clutter, loud, busy

1. The purpose of this website is to encourage customers to lease cars from this particular leasing company.
2. Younger generation of drivers, as the website has tried to use humour and GIFs to encourage younger drivers to hire cars from them, as they will seem approachable. However, it seems a bit unapproachable due to the clutter and loudness of the site.
3. The target audience will need to understand how they can go bout hiring cars from this company, where to go, and who to trust. They don't need a chat room on the side.

EVANGEL CATHEDRAL:

flash plug ins, dramatic, ridiculous, american, cheesy, fast moving, distracting, loud music

1. To inform and educate the reader about the Evangel Cathedral, why they should practise their religion here, and what services they offer.
2. The target audience are definitely American citizens, due to the over dramatic and cheesy feel to the website. I'd say that the cathedral have aimed it towards religious people between the ages of 20 and 40 - maybe trying to make religion look cooler to the younger generation.
3. The website needs to encourage people to go there, by being informative and creative. They need to make their cathedral seem unique and convince the reader that they will have lots of fun at their services.

NO LIMIT ARCADES:
horrific, scary, hard to look at, busy, loud, cluttered, sickening

1. To inform the reader about No Limit Arcades - where they can find them, how much it costs, what games you can play there etc.
2. The target audience would be young arcade goers, between the ages of 7 and 20.
3. The target audience need clarity as well as enough information about the arcade to convince them to go there. Pictures of the arcade and games you can play will also be helpful to convince the audience to participate and venture out there.

LEG WORK STUDIO:
minimal, unorthodox, confusing, illustrative, monotone, awful typeface

1. Legwork Studio is a design blog showcasing work created by this particular studio to possible clients. The website's purpose is to inform the clients about the kind of work they produce as well as persuading them how professional and unique their design work is and how they can benefit from these designers.
2. The target audience are possible clients interested in illustrative design work and friendly, young designers. Possibly aimed more towards the younger generation of clientele.
3. The target audience need a variety of things from this website - they need a clear and concise understanding of what the designers have to offer them, they need to be able to understand how to navigate around the website with ease, they need to be able to see the work that has been produced in the past, they need to see that the designers are professional and hard working, and they also need to know where to contact the designers.

HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA
http://heyyeyaaeyaaaeyaeyaa.com
loud, silly, music, colourful, rainbow, kids, GIFs

1. The purpose of this website is to entertain the viewer. It's somewhere to go when you're feeling a little bit silly and weird, or if you really love this guy and his song.
2. The target audience are definitely the younger generation. My little brother loves this meme and guy for some reason. The target audience would be between 10 and 18.
3. The target audience need to be able to listen to the song and watch the animation to get the full experience.

THE QUIET PLACE
http://thequietplaceproject.com/thequietplace
pointless, annoying music, plain, minimal, interactive, strange, why?

1. The purpose of this website is somewhere for the viewer to go to when they need to think about nothing and relax. The website is designed to be blank and minimal to help you relax.
2. The target audience would be younger generation again, as I don't think older readers will appreciate a website like this as much. I think it's aimed at people between the ages of 15 and 30 who are stressed and need a bit of inspiration, if they're looking for websites for that kind of thing.  I didn't like it myself.
3. The audience need to understand the website easily and find their way around the site without any hesitation or struggle, otherwise what would be the point in trying to relax?

POINTER POINTER
http://www.pointerpointer.com

weird, clever, creepy, funny, bizarre, fun

2. The target audience would be the younger generation, between the ages of 12 and 25.
3. The target audience need a website that is engaging, interactive and funny. Something that makes them want to show their friends and go back to the site when they're bored.

DESIGN MUSEUM
http://designmuseum.org
clear, concise, aesthetically pleasing, pink, green, design

1. The purpose of this website is to inform the reader about the Design Museum, where you can find them and what they exhibit there. It also needs to persuade the reader to visit and spend money there.
2. The target audience are young professionals / creatives who are interested in design - between the age of 17 and 30.
3. The target audience need a clear and concise website that encourages the reader to visit the Design Museum. They need to understand what the museum is about, how to get there, how much it costs, and they need to be able to navigate around the page with ease.
